Transoesophageal Echocardiogram

The transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) provides exceptionally clear and detailed images of the heart by using an ultrasound probe positioned in the oesophagus (gullet), which sits directly behind the heart. Because the probe is much closer to the heart than with a standard echo, we can visualise structures such as the heart valves, the aorta, and potential blood clots with remarkable precision. Before the procedure, your throat is numbed and light sedation is given to keep you comfortable, and you’ll be monitored throughout. This test is commonly used to investigate valve disease, sources of stroke, and infections of the heart valves.
