An implantable loop recorder (ILR) is a small device, about the size of a matchstick, inserted just under the skin of the chest to continuously monitor your heart rhythm for up to three years. It is a valuable diagnostic tool for patients with unexplained fainting (syncope), infrequent palpitations, or suspected intermittent arrhythmias that are too rare to be captured on shorter-term monitors. The insertion is a quick, minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic, leaving only a tiny scar. The device automatically records abnormal rhythms and can also be activated by you when symptoms occur, ensuring that no diagnostic clues are missed.
